Fjeldabers

My cousin Julie is studying abroad in Denmark this semester. In her most recent post, she mentioned that a bunch of Norwegians were in town for the big soccer match. The Danes have a nickname for the Norwegians: Fjeldabers (mountain monkeys). Let me explain the boys' heritage and you'll see why I found this nickname so funny.

Eric is 100% Norwegian. I am 1/4 Irish and 1/4 Norwegian. In addition, I'm 1/8 Scottish, 1/8 English, 1/8 Danish, and 1/8 Swedish. (And I still haven't been to the new IKEA! Seriously!) Find a common denominator of 8, double it to 16 so it's easier to divide all of the numerators by 2, and... that makes the boys 5/8 Norwegian, 1/8 Irish, 1/16 Scottish, 1/16 English, 1/16 Danish, and 1/16 Swedish. So if the majority of their heritage is Norwegian, I think that makes them Fjeldabers. No wonder I've been referring to them as my monkeys. Here's what my fjeldabers were up to today.

For the first time, we took advantage of my part-time status and trekked over to the park after lunch. The boys had a great time on the swings. The park was empty until two little kids arrived with their nanny. She was really enjoying our little guys and I enjoyed speaking Spanish with her. Although she can speak English as well, she told me that she mainly speaks Spanish with the kids (a four-year-old girl and a two-year-old boy). I actually was confused when the kids first arrived, because the little girl was speaking both English and Spanish. It turns out that both of the kids were extremely proficient in Spanish, which was pretty neat to see. I hope they can retain their proficiency as it will definitely be helpful if they study Spanish later on in high school.

Next up, turning some gears. They also went down the slide a few times, but I was busy catching instead of taking pictures.

After supper, the boys and I headed out for a run. It started sprinkling just as I was getting ready to close the garage, so I went back inside and grabbed a blanket to cover up the boys. The boys never complained and stayed pretty dry. I was pretty drenched by the time we were done, but I'll take running in the rain/drizzle over 90 degree weather any day. On our way home, we stopped off for a quick visit with Grandma.

We were hoping to wish Happy Birthday to Auntie Kelsey via Facetime, but our schedules didn't quite match up. So in honor of your birthday, here are some pictures that look like they were taken in the 80's. (My camera battery had just died and my cell phone doesn't take the best pictures in poor lighting.)

Happy Birthday, Kelsey!!!
