"One could say I went into the family business. My parents were teachers. I have a grandma, aunts and uncles who were teachers. I have always wanted to be a math teacher- I really can’t remember ever wanting to do anything else. By my junior year of high school, I realized I was not only learning content from my teachers. I was paying attention to how they taught. I learned from the good… and the not so good. During my 8th year of teaching, I had the opportunity to thank some of my favorite teachers in person.
The receptionist at my high school was one in a million. Mrs. Law took care of all of us and I loved to make excuses to go visit her in the main office whenever I had the chance. I was a rule-following student, but when it came to spending time with her, I was willing to take the risk. She painted my nails before prom, had me over for dinner after soccer practice, and even consoled me when I bombed a Chemistry test. In 2006, ten years after my high school graduation, she attended my wedding. Sadly, Mrs. Law passed away September 22, 2007. I prepared two days worth of lessons for my students and made the drive from Littleton to Casper to help honor a true angel.
The day of Mrs. Law’s funeral was definitely bitter-sweet. The best outcome of that day- I was given the opportunity to talk to some of my favorite teachers. My junior high and high school Spanish teachers, Mr. and Mrs. Giraldo, who were excited to find out I have gone to Spain twice with one of my coworkers and our students. Mrs. Green who was firm, but fair. Mrs. Poe who treated us like adults. They both held us to extremely high standards in Social Studies and English. Mr. Lamb, my Calculus teacher, will always be one of my favorite teachers. Maybe us Math nerds have a special bond? And that wonderful lady who I was there to remember? Mrs. Law taught me to be patient and kind to everyone. It was such a special day because I was given the opportunity to say THANK YOU to the teachers who made me the teacher I am!
